Created by KidsPeace in 1998, TeenCentral is a free, anonymous, confidential web-based service, that aims to help offer support and possible preventative steps for individuals in their time of need. The core of its offering is the ability for young people to submit their questions, concerns or situations through the site and receive a “handcrafted” therapeutic support response within 24 hours via a group of trained volunteers and clinical professionals. In addition, the site now has a renewed emphasis on clinically driven content, to make the best information available to teens as they search online regarding the issues they are facing. This includes a new library of relevant content on a wide range of topics, from substance use to relationships to concerns of LBGT youth to bullying to mental health issue like anxiety and depression, among others. And it now features the TeenCentral ToolBox, a collection of clinical tools teens can use on their own, designed to empower them and to provide concrete intervention suggestions to cope with their struggles. We will take the oppurutnity to learn the ways in which we utilize this to enhance youth and family engagement through an interactive walkthrough of the site, and an opportunity to gain a more in-depth look behind the curtain.
At the end of this webinar participants will be able to:
1) Gain an understanding of how a long-running effort to encourage teens to share their concerns and receive therapeutic support could be “re-imagined” to address the current needs of that population.
2) Review potential uses of these service in more clinically focused programs, as a component of outpatient care or as aftercare following residential treatment.
3) Offer insights into the question of how TeenCentral can partner with other agencies/public efforts/governmental entities to expand its reach and secure sustainable financial and logistical support in the future.
Presenter: Dominick DiSalvo, Senior Director of Clinical Services, PA Residential, KidsPeace, Nationally Certified Trauma Focused Cognitive Behavior Therapy (TF-CBT) Therapist, and Board Member for the Pennsylvania Council of Children, Youth, and Family Services (PCCFYS).
