Founded in 1908, Vista Del Mar Child and Family Services (Vista) has a rich history as an innovative leader in the area of children and family services, continually evolving to serve the ever-changing needs of children, adolescents, families and the community. Vista’s mission is to provide comprehensive, family-centered social, educational, and behavioral health services, which encourage children, adolescents and their families to lead self-reliant, stable, and productive lives. Originally established as a Jewish orphanage, Vista serves a broad and diverse community and has adapted to the increasingly complex needs of children and families. Located in the heart of West Los Angeles, Vista Del Mar’s expansive 17-acre campus provides a peaceful setting where the majority of services are provided. Here you will find the Vista School, Therapeutic Residential Services, Outpatient Clinic, Adoption Services, Autism Services, and Wraparound Services. Vista offers a range of services designed to help children, adolescents, and their families manage all levels of behavior challenges. All services strive to provide children and families with the tools they need to learn and grow, and include in-depth resources for parents and caregivers. Services include: Intensive Treatment, Mental Health and Wellness, Autism, Parent and Family Resources, and Psycho-Educational Assessments. The agency also operates the Vista School that serves children from Pre-K to 22 who need support with a range of cognitive, behavioral, and social challenges. As one of the oldest adoption agencies in Southern California, Vista is nationally recognized as a leader in the field of adoption. In addition, Vista is committed to providing a variety of training opportunities to mental health professionals with a focus on working with children and adolescents. Vista’s Reiss-Davis Child Study Center and Institute provides Fellowship Programs, a Graduate School, and continuing education opportunities for working professionals. After 18 years with Vista Del Mar and its family agencies, the last three as CEO, Nancy Tallerino will be retiring from her role as President & CEO.

THE OPPORTUNITY:

The President & CEO reports directly to the Board of Directors and is responsible for planning, implementing, supervising and assessing Vista’s operations in support of the programs provided by the agency. Working closely with the Board of Directors, the CEO will ensure that the mission of the agency is carried out and will provide vision and operational leadership for the
organization’s future growth and development. As a highly visible representative of Vista, the CEO is responsible for developing and maintaining strong relationships with various constituencies including children and their families, Board members, funders, volunteers, government, and partner agencies.

Vista has an annual operating budget of $45 million. The CEO will oversee the budget and a staff of 460 full-time and 106 part-time employees. The CEO provides support and direct oversight to the following direct reports: Executive Vice President, Business & Finance; Medical Director; Senior Vice President, Intensive Intervention Programs; Vice President, Development & Marketing; Vice President, Human Resources; Senior Vice President, Outpatient Services and Professional Training; Vice President, Education; and Vice President, Reiss-Davis Institute/Provost.

Specific duties and responsibilities include:

• Leadership – Articulating vision and strategic direction of Vista, ensuring the implementation of the strategic plan and recommending short term and long range plans and budgets to the Board of Directors; formulating budgets for plans, programs, and objectives, and directing all programs, services, and activities; articulating both the short term and long term vision of the agency and ensuring that overall agency objectives and milestones are met.

• Management and Staff Development – Leading senior management team to strengthen and support the programmatic, financial, and operational goals of Vista; involvement in recruiting, developing, and motivating staff; identifying training needs and ensuring development and implementation of programs that address needs; overseeing succession planning and assessment of staff; reviewing current practices and methods, and initiating development of new ones as necessary to reduce costs, encourage growth, and improve efficiency.

• Funding – Developing effective partnerships, collaborations, and strategic alliances with government agencies, corporations, and other sources of funds within the nonprofit industry, as well as with individuals; representing Vista to prospective and current major funding sources; including developing and seeking grants.

• Board Relations – Facilitating operations and administration of the Board, by promoting proactive Board development, advising and informing Board members, interfacing between Board and staff, and supporting the Board to fulfill its governance function.

• Quality, Compliance and Reporting – Ensuring that agency activities and operations are in compliance with local, state, and federal regulations and laws governing business operations; establishing systems to regularly and systematically evaluate the results of overall operations and programs.

• Financial Duties – Overseeing the development of budgets for submission to the Board; ensuring the Board is regularly informed on the financial status of the agency; providing the appropriate control and accountability of all funds, physical assets, and other property.

• Advocacy, Community Relations and Communications – Assuring that the agency and its mission, programs and services are consistently presented in a strong, positive image to relevant stakeholders; maintaining leadership and program advocacy role of the agency by interfacing with other community organizations and key constituent groups, County departments, and political leaders through direct contact and through local and state provider associations.

TRAITS AND CHARACTERISTICS DESIRED:

The President & CEO must possess a passion for working with, and encouraging, children, adolescents and their families to lead self-reliant, stable and productive lives. The ideal candidate is a collaborative team builder, mentor, and seasoned leader who operates with a strategic perspective while executing the day-to-day activities. The CEO will be a visionary, forward- thinking leader with an entrepreneurial spirit. A strong business acumen that will enable the CEO to make effective decisions regarding the future growth of the agency is key. Excellent communication skills, both written and oral, including outstanding public speaking skills are essential, as the CEO will represent Vista to its various constituencies. The CEO will have strong interpersonal skills and be a natural relationship builder. Proven fundraising experience and the ability to relate comfortably with a variety of funding sources, including public funding stream contacts, foundations, and individuals are essential.

The President & CEO will be a good listener who is accessible and who possesses the ability to adapt and respond effectively to change, while continuing to lead and mentor the team. This individual needs to be a coalition-builder who can work on multiple levels with a wide variety of constituencies to implement programs and processes, and facilitate change, when required. The CEO will have a demonstrated commitment to promoting diversity within the organization and recognition of the diverse nature of the community. An inclusive leadership style that endorses collaboration and open, transparent communication will be highly valued. This individual will accomplish goals through motivation, the delegation of authority, and the use of systems that are designed for effective planning, evaluation, and accountability. The successful candidate will have critical thinking skills and will display integrity, good judgment, technical expertise, strong organizational skills, and logical priority-setting skills.

The ideal candidate will have a proven track record of leading a diverse human service, corporate or nonprofit organization that is recognized for its commitment of exemplary service to the community. A record of success in developing strategic goals and implementing plans to attain them is important. Experience in building, retaining, leading, and monitoring a high performance, cohesive management team is important; additionally, this executive will understand how to build and sustain a resilient culture. The ability to provide exceptional programmatic results while simultaneously growing an organization’s talent, systems, and processes to enhance its impact will be valued. The successful candidate will have experience working collaboratively with a Board of Directors in executing a vision and mission. An understanding of current developments in the field of human services and their potential impact on the agency would be highly valued.

EDUCATION:

An advanced degree is strongly preferred.
