The Children's Shelter
The Shelter runs two residential group homes for youth ages 10 to 18. Most of the youth are referred via state child welfare contractors. They offer emergency shelter beds, police protective custody beds and can provide respite beds for families wishing to place with them through a private arrangement. Some youth stay several years while some stay only a few days.
The Shelter, Inc. has a full staff of trained social workers and can accommodate up to 30 children at a time. Their service area includes the entire state but about 25% of our kids come from Douglas County with 40% coming from nearby Wyandotte, Shawnee, Johnson and Leavenworth counties.
While with Shelter, Inc., youth attend public schools and receive additional tutoring services. They ensure their healthcare and therapeutic needs are met by working with local providers, offer life skills training and help many of their youth continue to work in the community and participate in extracurricular activities.
