Evaluating the Design of Inpatient and Residential Mental and Behavioral Health Environments for Youth

This poster presentation will present findings from interviews with experts in inpatient and residential mental health facility design for youth and experts in the treatment of youth in these settings to better understand how the design of the physical environment impacts youth experiences and outcomes. A focus of these interviews will be placed on understanding the developmental considerations that must be accounted for in the design of youth-focused facilities, as well as how the environment can better support trauma-informed care practices. These interviews are intended to help formulate a survey that can be distributed to administrative, clinical, and facility healthcare staff to evaluate the quality of mental and behavioral health environments for youth.
