Scope and Purpose of Position

To empower parents so they can become successful in making the necessary connections to resources, guidance and support needed to help them navigate through the systems of care (i.e., child welfare, juvenile court) and their youth’s treatment while restoring, rediscovering, and redefining their relationship with their child and family.


Tasks of the Position

·       Must be a positive role model, provide hope, and shares their lived experience

·       Develop a trusting professional relationship with the parents, by providing culturally competent, non-judgmental, empathetic care

·       Be available for others and have consistent contact with your partner parent

·       Advocate and mentor parents about child-servicing systems (school, juvenile justice, mental health) by assisting parents with decision making, finding adequate educational material, providing resources, role playing situations, helping prepare questions and attending meetings

·       Works effectively and competently as a team member

·       Participate in ongoing support groups/ training

·       Participate in presentations about the Parent Ambassadors in community agencies and organizations

·       Invite parents to become Ambassadors to support, build resilience and empower other parents and families

·       Clearly and honestly describes the Parent Ambassador role and policies involving confidentiality, limitations, and boundaries

·       Uses active listening skills to understand and/ or assist the family with identifying their strengths, current natural support system and resources

·       Assist families with identifying priorities, needs, wants and goals

·       Assists parents (if desired) with developing skills in problem-solving, conflict resolution, and assertive communication

·       Attend trainings and practices system of care values and principles (Risking Connections, Trauma Response Implemented Practice)

·       Encourages self-care, wellness, and natural supports by providing resources in community (peer support group, massage, yoga, meditation, activities for family, sports, etc.)

·       Other duties deemed necessary



·       Is professional and manages time effectively

·       Significant progress in personal acceptance, responsibility and healing pertaining to one’s recovery and involvement with child welfare

·       Desire to have a positive impact on the mental health, child welfare and juvenile court systems

·       Desire to promote needed system changes that effect at-risk parents and children

·       Ability to always maintain confidentiality

·       Ability to work as part of a team and maintain lines of open communication

Supervisory Responsibility



 Qualifications (Education / Training)

Minimum Required

·       High School Diploma or GED

·       Must have valid Michigan Driver’s License with appropriate insurance

·       Past personal involvement and successful completion of services through the child welfare, juvenile and other services

·       Genuine concern and compassion for others

·       Sensitivity to cultural, ethnic, and economic diversity

·       Willingness to learn and work within systems’ protocols

·       Ability to form relationships and work within communities to educate and recruit parent ambassadors

·       Assist in the planning and implementation of workshops, trainings, and other events

·       Basic Microsoft Office software programs’ skills (Word, Excel, etc.)

·       Ability to articulate ideas, concerns, and thoughts


·       Some college or business courses preferred

·       Experience working with families
