Characteristics of Relational Caring: The Role of Direct Care Staff in Helping Children, Youth, and Families Heal

This presentation will provide participants with an overview of the background and content of the Characteristics of Relational Child and Youth Care. This relational approach provides language and guidance which can support the development of a healing centered milieu. A relational approach to caring for young people increases the quality of care and the dignity of the adult role. The interaction between the child and the adult who spends the most time with them is the most powerful and influential factor in creating a safe and trauma-responsive environment. For programs who want to minimize retraumatization and reduce coercion this is a critical factor to attend to.
