Across hundreds of thousands of years, humans evolved to thrive in egalitarian societies where child and elder, male and female, leader and follower, all lived in mutual support. Canadian anthropologist Inge Bolin describes how Indigenous peoples have reared their young in “cultures of respect” by meeting universal developmental needs for Belonging, Mastery, Independence, and Generosity (described by Native authors as the Circle of Courage). Evolutionary science shows that our brains and bodies have adapted to living in harmony with one another and the natural world. Yet while this is the most prosperous era in human history, “dominator cultures” have disrupted our social systems. In simple terms, the modern world is mismatched to our DNA. This presentation draws from a forthcoming book by Martin Brokenleg and Larry Brendtro. Discussion is geared to all who care for children and youth, or who want to change organizations and communities by building cultures of respect.
